# How many cups of coffee are consumed each day?

When we consider the scale of the environmental impact of coffee and how it’s consumed, some of the statistics around it are staggering!  We did some back-of-the-envelope math a couple ways to estimate how many cups of coffee are consumed each day.

### How many cups of coffee are consumed globally per day?

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), in the 2020/21 coffee year, total coffee consumption worldwide was estimated at 166.29 million bags of 60kg, or approximately 9.98 billion kilograms of coffee. This is equivalent to approximately 2.8 billion cups of coffee per day.  That’s about 1.02 trillion cups of coffee a year!

Another source, the National Coffee Association USA, estimates that Americans alone consume 400 million cups of coffee per day, which translates to 146 billion cups of coffee per year. The European Coffee Federation estimates that Europeans consume around 3.3 cups of coffee per day on average, which would equate to approximately 1.2 trillion cups of coffee per year.

### How many cups of coffee are consumed each day in the US?

According to the National Coffee Association USA, Americans consume approximately 400 million cups of coffee per day. This figure is based on a 2021 survey conducted by the association, which found that 79% of Americans reported drinking coffee within the past day, with an average consumption of 3.1 cups per day among coffee drinkers. This translates to a total of around 146 billion cups of coffee consumed in the United States per year.

### How many cups of coffee are consumed each day in Europe?

The amount of coffee consumed in Europe varies by country and region, as coffee culture and consumption habits can differ widely. According to the European Coffee Federation, the average coffee consumption in Europe is approximately 3.3 cups per day per person. This estimate is based on a survey of 15 European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

### What is the size of the global market for coffee in revenue?

The global coffee industry is a vast and diverse market that encompasses everything from coffee production and processing to retail sales of coffee products. According to recent estimates by Statista, the industry was worth around \$102 billion in 2021 and is projected to continue growing in the years to come.

### How many people work in the coffee industry?

Coffee production can have important social impacts on the communities involved in the coffee supply chain. According to the International Coffee Organization, more than 25 million people around the world rely on coffee production for their livelihoods. However, coffee farmers often face significant challenges, including low prices, volatile markets, and climate change. One study estimated that more than 60% of coffee farmers in Central America live in poverty, while another study found that women coffee farmers often face additional challenges such as limited access to credit and land tenure rights. In addition to these challenges, coffee production can also be associated with issues such as child labor and poor working conditions in some regions.
