When we consider the scale of the environmental impact of coffee and how it’s consumed, some of the statistics around it are staggering! We did some back-of-the-envelope math a couple ways to estimate how many cups of coffee are consumed each day.

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), in the 2020/21 coffee year, total coffee consumption worldwide was estimated at 166.29 million bags of 60kg, or approximately 9.98 billion kilograms of coffee. This is equivalent to approximately 2.8 billion cups of coffee per day. That’s about 1.02 trillion cups of coffee a year!
Another source, the National Coffee Association USA, estimates that Americans alone consume 400 million cups of coffee per day, which translates to 146 billion cups of coffee per year. The European Coffee Federation estimates that Europeans consume around 3.3 cups of coffee per day on average, which would equate to approximately 1.2 trillion cups of coffee per year.
