Should I try mushroom coffee?

Lion's Mane Mushrooms

Mushroom coffee combines traditional coffee with powdered extracts from various medicinal mushrooms. Reishi, chaga, lion’s mane, and cordyceps are commonly included for their health benefits. Sometimes it’s one, and sometimes it’s a blend.

Mushroom coffee made by blending powdered mushroom extracts with regular coffee grounds. The mixture is then brewed like traditional coffee, using methods such as drip brewing, French press, or espresso machines. There are also many instant options. The resulting beverage tastes (somewhat) similar to regular coffee but with the added flavor and potential health benefits of the mushrooms. As for whether mushroom coffee tastes better than regular coffee, well, I’d say it tastes better than you might expect, but I’d say you should choose it for the health benefits, and not enhancing the flavor of coffee.

Some of the benefits include:

  1. Improved Focus and Mental Clarity: Lion’s mane mushroom, in particular, is believed to have cognitive-enhancing properties. It may help improve focus, memory, and overall mental clarity. When combined with caffeine, it can provide a balanced energy boost without the jitters often associated with regular coffee.
  2. Adaptogenic Properties: Many medicinal mushrooms are considered adaptogens, which means they may help the body adapt to stress and promote overall well-being. Reishi and cordyceps are known for their adaptogenic properties, potentially helping the body manage stress more effectively.
  3. Immune Support: Mushrooms like chaga and reishi are believed to have immune-boosting properties due to their beta-glucans and other bioactive compounds. Consuming them in mushroom coffee could potentially support your immune system.
  4. Antioxidant Benefits: Mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, which can help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Chaga, in particular, is known for its high antioxidant content.
  5. Reduced Caffeine Jitters: Some people find that mushroom coffee provides a smoother, less jittery energy boost compared to regular coffee. This is because the mushrooms may help modulate the caffeine’s effects.
  6. Gut Health: Certain mushrooms contain prebiotic fibers that can promote a healthy gut microbiome. A healthy gut is associated with various health benefits, including improved digestion and a stronger immune system.4
  7. Potential Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Some mushrooms, such as chaga and reishi, are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation in the body.

While there is some promising research on the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms, the scientific evidence is still evolving, and more research is needed to understand their potential fully. Additionally, the specific benefits of mushroom coffee may vary depending on the type and quality of mushrooms used and the individual’s response.
