What types of cloth bags can I use to make cold brew?

Whenever it’s time to get your cold brew fix, there are several types of cloth bags available for cold brew coffee. While nylon is a man-made, non-biodegradable polymer, it works well for repeated cold brew making, especially regarding cleaning up and not getting moldy. We use large muslin bags, rinse them clean, and then occasionally toss in laundry or dishwasher.

Some popular options include:

Muslin bags: These bags are made from a lightweight, breathable cotton fabric and are commonly used for steeping tea or coffee. They are available in a variety of sizes and can be found at most kitchen supply stores or online.

Cheesecloth bags: These bags are similar to muslin bags but are made from a slightly coarser cotton fabric. They are also commonly used for steeping tea or coffee and can be found at most kitchen supply stores or online.

Nylon mesh bags: These bags are made from a fine nylon mesh and are designed to be reusable. They are easy to clean and can be used for steeping coffee or tea.

Reusable coffee filters: These filters are made from a washable and reusable fabric specifically designed to brew cold brew coffee. They are easy to clean and can be used again and again.

Drawstring bags: These bags can be made from a variety of materials such as cotton, linen, or muslin and have a drawstring closure. They are available in different sizes and can be found online or in kitchen supply stores.

It is important to note that, when using cloth bags, you should always rinse them thoroughly before using them to remove any dust or debris and after using them to remove any coffee or tea grounds. The non-nylon ones can get pretty gross and moldy if not well-rinsed and dried, which precludes them from future use.
